How to Renew Your Driving Licence in the UK
Renewing your driving licence in the UK is simple and can be done online, at a Post Office, or by post. Here’s a quick overview:
Online Renewal
The quickest way to renew is online, costing £14. You’ll need:
- A driver and vehicles account or your UK passport (or your UK Visas and Immigration account identity document)
- Your current licence, National Insurance number, and addresses from the past 3 years
You can’t apply online if your name or title has changed. In that case, you’ll need to apply by post.
At the Post Office
Bring your reminder letter and photocard licence to a Post Office that handles DVLA renewals. It costs £21.50. If your name has changed, you’ll need to apply by post.
By Post
Get a ‘D1 pack’ from a participating Post Office and send it to DVLA with:
- A passport-type photo
- Your current licence
- A £17 cheque or postal order (no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short-period licence)
