How to Book Your Theory Test Online

You can book your driving theory test online using the official DVSA Theory Test Booking Service.

Cars
Motorcycles
Lorries, buses, and coaches (including Driver CPC parts 1a, 1b, and 2)

🔹 What You Need to Book:
Your UK driving licence number
A valid email address
A credit or debit card for payment

Theory Test Costs

💰 Car and motorcycle test: £23

💰 Lorry and bus tests:

  • Part 1a (multiple-choice questions): £26
  • Part 1b (hazard perception): £11
  • Part 2 (case studies): £23

Important: You must have lived in England, Wales, or Scotland for at least 185 days in the past 12 months before taking your test.


When You Do NOT Need a Theory Test

You do not need to take a theory test before booking a practical test if you’re:

🔹 Upgrading your licence

  • From automatic to manual car licence
  • From A1 (small motorcycle) to A2 (medium motorcycle) (if held for 2+ years)
  • From C1 (medium vehicles) to C (large vehicles) (unless obtained via car test)
  • From D1 (minibus) to D (bus)

🔹 Booking a test for:

  • Towing a trailer
  • Taxi driving
  • Tractor driving
